How to get a North Dakota insurance license

As a life and health insurance education provider, our goal is to guide you through the pre-licensing process. In addition to completing your pre-licensing training, we have simplified the steps to attaining your North Dakota insurance license.

North Dakota Insurance Exam Qualifications

In order to qualify to sit for your North Dakota Life & Annuity or Accident & Health or a course for Life, Annuity, Accident and Health exam, the following must occur:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a resident of the state of North Dakota
  • Must not have committed any act that is a ground for denial of license

Basic Steps to Obtain a North Dakota Insurance License

  1. Prepare for your state exam with an insurance course from a North Dakota insurance school for the Life & Annuity or Accident & Health insurance license, or a course for the Life, Annuity, Accident & Health insurance license.
  2. Schedule your state exam online through Prometric, or contact them by phone at 1-800-896-2272.
  3. Individuals apply for an insurance license must undergo a criminal background check, which includes fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be scanned at the test center upon completion of your state exam.
  4. Upon successful completion of your state exam, you should complete an insurance license application through Vertafore (formerly Sircon). Once you are on Vertafore’s website, you will choose 'Apply for a license' from the menu on the left. On the next page choose 'Individual' next to Submit Resident Application. Next, complete the application by choosing North Dakota, entering your information and submitting the appropriate application fees.
Expected Licensing Costs:
$49 Exam Fee - Life & Annuity or Accident & Health
$41.25 BCI Electronic Fingerprint Processing Fee - This MUST be paid with a company check, personal check, money order or cashier's check made payable to The North Dakota Attorney General. Credit cards are not be accepted.
$15 Prometric Electronic Fingerprint Processing Fee - Do not schedule your fingerprint appointment until you have passed your licensing exam. You will not be fingerprinted if you do not pass your exam, as all fees are non-refundable.
$100 Application Fee
